Burn More?

From Runner’s World: Running v. Walking: How Many Calories Will You Burn?
Two weeks ago, I began planning an update to a Walking v. Running calorie-burn article that I had written for Runner’s World magazine in 2005. When that article subsequently appeared on the RunnersWorld.com website, it attracted a lot of interest and comments. Some of those comments displayed the widespread confusion and outright disbelief that’s common to this topic. Growing a Wave to Catch in the Backyard

Some people like to garden, some people might also like a beer garden, but now comes a new type of garden – a Wavegarden. This allows for home-grown waves for surfing right in the backyard.  This could be a godsend to those who want to hit the surf but live far from the beach.

Basically Spanish engineering firm Instant Sport has created a prototype in Northern Spain that produces consistently rideable waves of all shapes and sizes – just like the ocean. These can be dialed up or down to suit a range of riders. Continue reading Growing a Wave to Catch in the Backyard

Ferrari Surfboard – Big Price, Old School Materials

We noted earlier today that Lamborghini was following Ferrari and Porsche into the bicycle arena, but for Ferrari doesn’t look like he wants to be left in the dust. The company has a number of fitness products available, including in-line skates and even a skateboard, however one of the companies most unique non-automotive products might be its branded surfboard.

The 7 foot, 2 inch board is customized Ferrari 16 M Scuderia Spider graphic design, and is a limited edition with just 499 made available. This all-around board is designed for beginners, but interestingly this surfboard is fairly low-tech materials department. Made of polyurethane, with glass fiber and resin it features only carbon fiber covered it. At almost $1700 this is an expensive board, and more high-tech options – including those made of carbon fiber – are available for less money. Of course those aren’t Ferrari branded.

From YouTube: Berkeley Cyclist Hit by Car

Me and my friend were hit by a car in California – Berkeley
The guy did not stop! He ran away!

Thank guys for your support! Yesterday I went to the police department and I reported the crime. I also gave the video to the police officer. It was possible to identify the number of the car on the video. The police have located the car and the owner. Now I’m waiting for the return of the police on the case. Surf Carbon Fiber

It might not take a rocket scientist to build a surfboard but that isn’t stopping a couple of surfboard makers from using aerospace engineering to create a line of light, strong and ascetically pleasing boards. Kitson Boards, LLC, a company that looks to change the way surfboards are made, and do so with new materials.

The company has been developing recreational boards that feature sleek designs yet are built for the long haul with carbon fiber, which offers a long history of strength to weight ratio. Additionally, as we noted in our recent Weekend Reading List coverage, “the typical surfboard is a slab of petroleum-spawned polyurethane slathered in layers of toxic polyester resin.” Carbon fiber could be an improvement on this, in part because of its ability to essentially last a lifetime. While polyester resin may break down in the surf and sun, carbon fiber is not inherently photodegradable and thus endure season after season. Continue reading Surf Carbon Fiber

New Shop for Surfer Girls

While surfing has been a coed sport long before the days of Gidget, most surf shops still cater to a surfer dude type of clientele. The South Coast Surf Shop, which is been a staple of the communities of Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach since 1974, looks to close one of its five retail locations near San Diego’s most popular beaches. Beginning this month South Coast Longboards will be transformed into South Coast Wahines Ocean Beach, catering to the female surfer. Continue reading New Shop for Surfer Girls

Goal-Line Tech

From ESPN Playbook: MLS moves toward goal-line technology

Other sports have utilized technology to ensure correct calls for years, from the ball-tracking system in tennis to instant replays in football and basketball. Finally, it appears soccer — the world’s most popular sport with the most passionate fans — will use technology to determine if a goal is, indeed, a goal. BlackBerry Surfs up $260,000 for SurfAid

There was a rumor that Research in Motion was developing a BlackBerry 10 mobile handset that would be called the “Surfboard,” but the mobile phone maker is actually involved with surfing in a different way. The BlackBerry maker actually held the SurfAid Ball in Sydney, Australia.

This looks like the beginning of an annual fundraiser from the non-profit humanitarian organization with the aim to improve the health, well being and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions. The group is also working to provide clean water programs. Continue reading BlackBerry Surfs up $260,000 for SurfAid

Every Third Thursday Creates Snow/Surfboard

Don’t tell the guys at Signal Snowboards/Every Third Thursday it can’t be done. They’re created snowboards with iPads and boomboxes built in, and now they’re done what a lot of people would likely say can’t be done – a snowboard that can double as a surfboard!

Now on the surface a board is a board, right? Well, yes and no. Both do ride on water – just one is wet and the other is frozen. And while surfing has existed as long as man has tried to float, snowboarding is actually a fairly new concept. But the latter does often look to the former.

So how’d it work? Better than expected as the video below shows! Video after the jump

Used Packaging to Catch a Wave

While that polystyrene foam – sometimes called by the brand name Styrofoam – does a great job protecting consumer electronics while in the box, the white stuff typically ends up in the garbage. But now the foam is seeing new uses as a surfboard.

This is the idea behind Sustainable Surf, a new nonprofit from South California that is looking to transform the foam into wave ready boards. The new program called Waste to Waves launched it first campaign, “Turn Your Trash Into Slash,” where companies (and even individuals) can give the polystyrene to Marko, which will transform it into a lightweight surf board. Long Boards for Bored Surfers

There is no denying that the skateboard came about when surfers put wheels on short boards to ride on land when the surf wasn’t up, and now some surfers from Huntington Beach, California are essentially reinventing it all over again with the Hamboard. What makes this one different is that it basically combines modern skateboards with a surfboard, resulting in what the creators called “a really big skateboard” or “basically an uber longboard or longboards.”

And the word from the creators is these boards, despite the length or possibly because of it, can carve and flow quite well. The surfers behind Hamboard have also noted that opinion has changed from those who simply to dismiss it to those who want to try it. So it could be the reinvention of sidewalk surfing all over again.
