Shareable Brain Buckets

Helmet-HubUsing a bikesharing program is a great way to get around a city without needing to actually purchase and own a bicycle. The problem is that riding in city traffic or even on city bike lanes can be dangerous, especially without a helmet.

Students at MIT have looked to address this issue and back in 2011 debuted the first HelmetHub, which provides rentable helmets, which are offered where bikeshare bicycles are provided.

Now the idea of wearing a “shared” helmet might seem a little “icky” to us – but the system actually provides 36 helmets in three sizes and more importantly returned helmets are inspected and sanitized prior to being rented out again.

Not a bad solution to ensuring that your head is protected when you ride a bike.

Plasma Technology

Mavic-PlasmaWhile we like plasma as a technology for watching TV, the Mavic Plasma SLR is a high-tech helmet that features Ergo Fit Pad technology. This race ready helmet offers carbon fiber structural reinforcement that allows for oversized vents while there is no compromise on protection.

The Ergo Hold SL Retention System makes for a lightweight brain bucket that offers optimal adjustability, comfort and head hold, while reflective highlights help it be seen – not that this one could be missed!

Giro Goes on the Attack

AirAttackLast year during the Tour de France we saw Giro’s new Air Attack helmet and it has flown into retail for this season. The helmet is now available in two models, including the Air Attack and the Air Attack Shield. This stealth-worthy brain bucket provides a unique design that can cut through the wind and according to the company has the lowest air drag of any road helmet on the market.

It features size vents with internal channeling, offers the Roc Loc air fit system and is constructed of an In-Mold polycarbonate shell with EPS liner so it can take a beating when you really need it. Video after the jump

On the QR

QRideQRide doesn’t want to keep anything down on the QT, instead it wants to include a QR code on cycling helmets as a way for emergency responders to access the information via a smartphone app. This could include emergency contact details, medical alerts, prescriptions or allergies on the online ID record. Although developed with cyclists in mind, QRide stickers can attach to just about any type of helmet.

Rock Head

Black-Diamond-VectorBrain buckets are a good idea for contact sports, cycling, skiing and yes climbing. While cats may land on their feet climbers all too often might land on their head. The Black Diamond Vector helmet is designed for those situations.

It is ideal for long routes, alpine climbs and other “weight-sensitive missions” and has a “barely there” feel to it. The geometric, co-molded EPD foam and polycarbonate shell provides full-coverage protection along with plenty of ventilation. This is a truly a diamond for the rough.

Triple Protection

Trilogy-HelmetThose who partake in multiple sports know that the same equipment doesn’t always cross over, but the new Cébé Trilogy helmet might just live up to its name. This helmet doesn’t actually offer triple the protection, but it can provide protection for three sports. It was designed to meet European standards for mountain biking (CEN 1078), skiing (CEN 1077) and mountaineering (CEN 12492).

Since a winter helmet isn’t the same as a summer helmet, the Trilogy’s modular design allows it to adjust as the season’s chance. A visor can be added for summertime mountain cycling, while ear pads and vent plugs can be used when skiing or snowboarding, and with a few change outs be ready for anything in between.

Lazer Focus

Is Lazer going to introduce an aero cycling helmet? The company provided a one-piece aero helmet to a few pro riders this year. The helmet was called the Helium FAST, but now rumors are circulating that the company, which is the oldest bicycle helmet maker in the world, might be making a consumer version. We’ll have to watch and see.

DORA Explores Helmet Design

Dora the Explorer would probably be inspired by Balazs Ficzer’s DORA helmet, which while still only a concept could be the future of helmets. It features front and rear LED lights as well as turn signals. The video below shows some other things that the DORA – the helmet not the cartoon girl – might be able to do. Video after the jump
