Hands On: Udderly Smooth Chamois Cream

If you’ve spent any time on the saddle you know that the chamois padding in your shorts, no matter how good, leave a little protection to be desired. While I’m waiting for the cycling season to begin, I had use for chamois cream over the winter.

I spent some time on my spinning bike in the off season, and even a few minutes on the stationary bike can add up to what feels like hours on the trail. I made spinning a little more comfortable with Udderly Smooth Chamois Cream. The cream is made with shea butter, and says it’s a greaseless formula.A few months ago we took a look at a few chamois creams, which described the two types: plain and Euro style. Udderly Smooth is plain-style cream that doesn’t have the menthol tingle. It’s really just a lubricant that provides slip, which equates to a little extra in the padding department.

Udderly Smooth is known for its moisturizers and lotions with the cow spots on the label. It started with Udder Cream, a greaseless, stainless water-based moisturizer. It was originally developed for use on dairy cows but its benefits were shared with people with dry skin. The company realized it could serve other markets and targeted cyclists with a chamois cream.

The main ingredients of the cream for cyclists are lanolin, mineral oil, shea butter and a light fragrance. If you have a lanolin allergy, which isn’t uncommon, then you want to keep looking. If you’re OK with lanolin, it’s a no-fuss cream that can help you put some time on the bike with a lot less pain in the rear.
