Hydraulic Brakin’ Into the Road

Hydraulic brakes have long been a staple on mountain bikes for years, but now Magura has introduced the world’s first hydraulic braking system for use on the road. The RT8 TT is a hydraulic rim brake system that can work with lightweight time trial and triathlon bikes.

The company has reported partnered with Cervélo to design the system, which will be integrated in the new P5 bike that was announced last week. The system includes carbon fiber levelers and will utilize “Royal Blood” mineral oil within the hoses. This regal sounding oil apparently won’t need to be changed, and is non-toxic – meaning that the RT8 TT system should be pretty maintenance free. While brake pads will need to be changed, the system should work for years without need for major adjustments. It should also be a real benefit for those making TT bikes, as the system promises a more streamlined cable routing – as hydraulic lines are lighter and generate far less friction.

The RT8 TT will be ready to roll out this year for the 2012 racing season and should be available for other makes after it debuts on the P5. Look for the system to arrive in June, with prices ranging $770 for the carbon fiber version, or $642 for aluminum levers. And word is that Magura will introduce the RT8 mechanical-to-hydraulic converter for those looking to add hydraulic brakes on bikes with existing mechanical levelers. Time to grease and go.
