CTIA 2012: Kraken a Mighty Phone Case

There is no shortage of mobile phone cases on display this week at the International CTIA 2012 in New Orleans. The trade show for all things mobile certainly has the phone covered in more ways than one. But anyone who has used a cycle mount and a hard shell knows that the two don’t play well together. The hard shell is ideal for protecting that smartphone on the go, but it seldom fits in most handlebar mounts.

What is a worried handset owner to do? Calling on the power of the titans might be a start and to that end Trident is showing its new Kraken A.M.S. series of mobile handset cases. We first heard about the Kraken back in the fall of 2010, but the company has made sure to keep the accessories coming.

This is a serious heavy duty cases that can protect a phone from falls and spills –but what makes it stand apart is that it is a modular system that adapt to the needs at moment.

It is actually three parts – plus accessories. First there is the silicone Perseus Case, which can be used as a standalone case for casual settings; a front exoskeleton that adds a bit of protection to the Perseus; and finally the back exoskeleton that provides maximum protection for the handset. If this was all the Kraken would still be pretty impressive, but if offers multiple accessories from a tripod mount, to desk clamp to windshield mount.

What we really like is the bike rail clamp, which can make this an ideal system for cyclists who want to use their phone as a bike computer. Rather than slipping the phone out of a hard case and into a handlebar mount the Kraken clips in and is ready to ride!

Releasing the Kraken after a ride is as easy as pushing in two buttons, ensuring that you don’t forget the phone in mount after a ride either!
