Cargo Bike Race in Rio Needs Crowdfunding

copenhagenizeIn Rio de Janeiro, Brazil deliveries don’t happen on trucks, most goods are delivered via cargo bikes. The riders get little recognition though they keep the vibrant city thriving. This mirrors the scenario in Copenhagen 80 years ago, and a race for those who ride cargo bikes brought the riders into the spotlight. Now one race organizer is hoping to get his plans to organize a race for cargo bike riders in Rio off the ground.

Rio’s First Cargo Bike Championship, organized by Copenhagenize EU and Mikael Coville-Andersen, is planned for May of 2014 if it reaches its goal of $40,000 in the next two weeks. Crowdfunding is being hosted on RocketHub.com. Pledge goods include a poster, t-shirts, and a book. But the true reward is giving the delivery bike riders s in Rio some recognition. The riders pedal goods from one location to the next whether it’s water, food or even several mattresses. They’re skilled and deserve their day in the sun.
