Fender Lights to Protect from Fender Benders

RevolightsBeing seen at night is really the first line of defense for cyclists, and the developers of the Revolights have created a bicycle fender that features an integrated light. However, the Revolights Arc is much more than a set of LED tail lights – it features sensors that actually allow it to operate much like a brake light as well. It can actually increase in brightness much like a car’s brake or go into a blinking mode to help really draw some attention to drivers.

Say You Want a Revolights

There is a certain irony in that many bicycle lights are located far higher than those on an automobile, which means that it isn’t able to illuminate the road as well. But Kent Frankovich and Adam Pettler had a revolutionary idea: mount the bike light on the wheel, which in turn put it closer to the ground.

The pair launched a Kickstarter campaign, with the goal to reach $43,500 and eventually raised more than $215,000, and the end result is that cyclists can now buy the new Revolights. Video after the jump

Building a Better Bike Light

What’s the one thing that comes standard on a bike? Reflectors. Yet many of us remove reflectors to shave weight, reduce drag and remove encumbrance. You can add a light to your bike. But we’re waiting for a better solution that effectively lights the road, alerts traffic to our presence and has a decent battery life.

Revolights might be our solution. This Kickstarter project is a set of front and rear lights installed on the bike’s rims. When turned on, the LED lights glow white in the front and red in the back. The lights are coordinated to your speed, so while they flash, the lights are in sync with the ride and serve their purpose of making you visible, and lighting the road ahead.
