Figure 8 Velodrome Concept

Architect Charles Wagner has created a novel concept for track bike racing with his Luxodrome design, which essentially consists of side-by-side 200 meter and 250 meter tracks that are connected with diverging lanes. Of course this would require a new type of racing, but it could put a new spin on the century old sport.

Velodrome Concept Design Has Riding on the Roof

The Dutch love their bicycles and they also know how to make excellent use of space. So much so that the the NL Architects have come up with an interesting bicycle club building that will put a velodrome on the roof. This solves a space problem, but also makes excellent use of the space. One catch is that you won’t head to the Netherlands to ride this track, as it is being designed for use in South China. The building with the velodrome roof could actually see construction in the next year.

Fast Track Cycling Breaks Ground on Cleveland Velodrome

Fast Track Cycling might just live up to its name, as it hopes to have its new Velodrome track, which is being built by Michigan based V-Worldwide, finished for the grand opening on June 16, 2012. Ground breaking began late last month.

Fast Track announced plans in January 2010 to build a velodrome track at the site of the former St. Michael’s Hospital in Broadway Slavic Village. Fast Track Cycling recently signed a ground lease agreement with the City of Cleveland for the 8.4 acre site for $1 per year.

Mini Drome Heads to Glasgow Scotland

The Red Bull Mini Drome, which is currently the world’s smallest velodrome, will make its way to Glasgow, Scotland for an indoor racing competition.

This is the first time the Red Bull Mini Drome has visited Scotland, and on June 25, the Barrowland Ballroom will play host to a race, where 100 randomly selected riders will compete in a single timed race of 10 laps. The fastest 32 will venture to the finals. Fixed gear bikes and helmets are required.

The purpose built track was designed and engineered in Germany by Velotrack, the team who built the tracks at the Atlanta Olympics and Delhi Commonwealth Games. It actually maintains racing dimensions in the smallest possible size to enable a single pursuit. This is the second time the track has visited the UK, and was used in a London competition earlier this year.

Olympic Velodrome Completed and Green

Let the games begin! That’s the feeling we’re getting right now as it has been announced that the site of the 2012 London Olympics track bike racing events has been completed.

The Hopkins Architects-designed arena can seat about 6000, and is the last of four permanent venues in the London Olympic Park to be completed. It is however the first to be completed on time and on budget. The sinuous velodrome was also reportedly inspired by the lightweight and streamlined bikes that do the loops inside. It features a track with western red cedar timber as the main cladding, while the roof collects rain water, which can be resued and recycled. The curved cable net structure is also designed to reflect sun, and thus reduce the need for air conditioning. Continue reading Olympic Velodrome Completed and Green

Red Bull Brings Out Mini Velodrome in London

Energy drink maker Red Bull packs a big punch in a small can, and maybe size does matter. To that end the drink maker has created the world’s smallest velodrome in London’s East End. This purpose-built track was created by Velotrack, the team behind the velodromes for the Atlanta Olympics and Delhi Commonwealth Games.

It is so small it could almost fit in the average America back yard… but we think we’ll keep to the road for now.
