Interbike: For Women Doesn’t Mean Pink

Just because it’s pink, doesn’t mean it’s made with women in mind. That’s the feeling among bikers and the emphasis of a handful of “made for women” bike clothing companies. That doesn’t mean they don’t have a pink jersey or pair of socks in there. Here’s a few companies tailoring their gear just for the fairer sex.

Shorts are among the most important garments for cyclists. They must have padding, and they should have coverage enough so people don’t see whether you wear underwear or go bare underneath. We’ve had a pair or two that were too revealing. Tough Chik Woman’s Cycling Shorts are a six-panel style with a rear privacy liner to keep things to the imagination. They feature an E.S.P. Chamois, silicon gripper and tagless labeling so you don’t have the discomfort of a tag poking at you while you ride. This short is recommended for mid-distance rides.

One of the original “for women” bike companies is Terry. They know how to design for the gals. The Coaster is a skort for a more feminine look while still maintaining comfort in the saddle. The skirt has an unattached liner with Italian chamois, a secure side-zip pocket, hidden side zipper to open the skort for more mobility, an adjustable waistband, snap-front closure, nylon and spandex woven material with four-way stretch and the skirt falls 16 inches from the waistband.

Cliff Bars begat Luna Bars (for women) begat Team Luna Chix begat Luna Sport Cycling Apparel for women. The team and  its community were unhappy with racing and riding apparel. Many of them tailored their team-issued wear to create more flattering lines and even more comfort, and the clothing line was born. Everything is designed with women in mind. The Convertible Top with Shrug is clearly a design for women. It’s a short-sleeve raglan jersey with a full zipper and rear pockets. The companion piece is a shrug that makes the jersey long-sleeve with a kissing welt and zipper garage that makes the ensemble look like a flattering long-sleeve jersey when worn together.
