Polaroid Gets Wet and Rugged

PolaroidPolaroid made quite a name for itself with its instant film photos, and while those have faded away – much like many of the actual photos – the company lives on (and it does still offer an instant print digital camera). It introduced the new XS80 action camera, which joins Polaroid’s extensive product offerings.

This action camera stands out, not only because it offers the ability to take 1080p video at 30FPS, and can features tough waterproof housing with anti-shake technology that is impact and shock-resistant, but this go anywhere camera is priced at just $129.99. For that price you might not worry so much that it can’t endure an adventure. Specs and features after the jump

Handy Indeed

HDR-GW66VESony is on a roll. Last week the company introduced a new digital binocular that can record still and video – so yeah it sounded a lot like a stereoscopic camera. But the company also unveiled the new sport-ready Handycam HDR-GW66VE.

It is waterproof to 10 meters, plus resists dust, dirt, is freezeproof and shockproof. It can record full HD video in high-quality AVCHD format, as well as web-friendly MP4. It can also shoot 20megapixel stills. For those who hear adventure calling this is one handy camera to have.

Dog Gone Camera Mount

AKA-DM1On the British science fiction series Doctor Who the robotic dog K-9 had a laser and could talk, but even in the future K-9 couldn’t take video for some reason. Sony hasn’t invented a way to make dogs talk or even shoot a laser, but the AKA-DM1 harness could allow you to mount an action camera on the dog. Whether the footage will be any good is the question.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t capture footage of your dog licking itself!

Adventure Pod

Breffo-Adventure-Camera-KitSpiderman could – if the theme of the animated show was to be believed – do whatever a spider could (can). The Adventure Camera Kit from Breffo won’t let your action camera climb up a wall, but it will provide greater mounting options. Unlike specialized handlebar mounts this one is adaptable to multiple uses. Its eight bendable legs can be used to prop up the camera, or secure it in place and even wrap around handlebars and other objects..

The legs are rubber-coated and waterproof so ready for to whatever adventure you’re experiencing. Just let the crime fighting to the super heroes. Continue reading Adventure Pod

Head Mounted Camera

We’ve seen a number of helmet mounted cameras, but the Lobster X can be worn directly on the head sans helmet. This South Korean developed action camera puts the electronics in flexible silicone strap that can be attached directly to the wearer’s head. This could allow runners, surfers and other athletes who don’t don a helmet to get that first person perspective. The only question we have is what this has to do with a lobster?

Made in America: POV Backpack

We’ve seen a number of action camera accessories that are designed to change the perspective, including a few wearable systems that change the view from first-person to third-person – putting the rider/runner/athlete in the shot.

The latest gizmo to entry this market is the VuPackPole, a POV/action camera backpack mount, which is now being developed by creator/designer Rodger Dean through a Kickstarter project. This pack is being designed and assembled in Alaska, and the frame is made using a CNC process from HPDE plastic, while the subsystem all and joint is made in Washington.

While this will allow wearer’s to be in the shot, the designers also noted that one problem with typical head-mounted systems is that the video can be shaky and hard to watch. By moving the camera to a pack it is more stable as well. According to Dean the joints will still give under pressure so no worries about getting caught up on branches! Video after the jump

Add Aerial Shots to GoPro

What has been missing from most action camera videos are those great aerial shots – the kind we see in pro bicycle races and other sporting events. Of course most people don’t have a helicopter at their disposal but what about a UAV – because they’re not just for shooting at the bad guys anymore.

The Lehmann LA100 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle works with the GoPro Hero 2 and 3 cameras and can fly to heights up to 300 feet for five minutes – which could be enough to time to get some aerial “b-roll” for your next daring video. Video after the jump

Camera Helmet

We’ve seen numerous cameras that can mount to a helmet, but now the Video Head is a camera system built into the helmet. This solves the problem of ensuring that a camera is positioned correctly, and also helps reduce the risk of injury from wearing a camera on top of a helmet.

The Video Head helmet features an integrated lens along with all the electronics within the brain bucket. The lens is positioned directly to the front of the helmet, while an LED along with beeps as audio cues let the wearer know the camera is operating. Three levels of helmet systems will be made available, and range from a basic model that offers VGA resolution with 60-degree angle lens to 720p (30fps) version with 120-degree lens, and finally to a top of the line version with 1080p (60fps) resolution with 127-degree angle. All three models will include a mini mic for audio recording, and Video Head will be ready to go this spring.

Get in the Picture

Why aren’t YOU in the picture? Most action cameras provide a “first-person view” as in the camera sees more or less what you see. What is missing is… YOU. But now Dutch film producer Thijs Vrij has created an action camera mount for GoPro and other cameras called the 3rd Person View.

This device essentially consists of three parts, which includes a waterproof adjustable waistband with a carbon fiber backplate, an alloy adjustable camera pole and a locking/release mechanism to mount the camera. As with other camera extenders it puts you into the action but this one is a wear and forget, and allows you to be in the action. Vrij is currently looking to raise funds via a Kickstarter project. Qmountz Up

The iPhone has created a revolution in tech fitness, and it actually isn’t a bad camera for capturing those moments on a bike. We’ve seen a fair share of special mounts for it, and the Qmountz case, which is waterproof and shock/shatter-resistant, could be the thing that truly turns the handset into a durable and reliable action camera. The Mapta-produced case offers options for helmet mount, handlebar mount and even chest mount. Mount up with the Qmountz.

2013 CES: 360-Degree Camera

Move over action cameras that offer a single point of view; the Geonaute camera can record 360-degree video and still images. Inside this device, which has to be worn on the top of one’s head it seems, are three 8MP cameras fitted with wide-angle lenses to capture everything in a 360-degree horizontal and 150-degree vertical field of view. This wearable camera can record up to two hours of video and can be controlled via a wristwatch-style remote.

This camera also promises to be rugged, and comes with a shockproof and waterproof housing, along with a variety of mounts so users can as adaptive as their adventures allow. Continue reading 2013 CES: 360-Degree Camera

2013 CES: Panasonic Gets In on the Action

It seems like everyone is now getting in on the action camera bandwagon. At last week’s 2013 International CES in Las Vegas Panasonic introduced its HX-A100, which offers a unique twist in the “point-of-view active lifestyle camera” category. Unlike those “helmet-mountable” cameras from GoPro, Contour and others this one features an earhook that makes it wearable without a helmet! This one is even waterproof so perhaps would let swimmers get in on the action too.

It features built-in Wi-Fi so users can broadcast live video with simultaneous full-HD recording, which can be controlled from smartphone or tablet as well. The new A100 will offer 140 minutes of battery life and can record in Full HD at 1,920×1,080 resolution at 60FPX. It will be ready to go in march.

Foolish New Action Camera

With a name like Foolish you might wonder what UK-based Nilox are thinking, but apparently this could be a smart move as the company looks to introduce a durable action camera at an affordable price. It will be available for £199.95 ($320). For that price the Nilox Foolish will come with a two waterproof casings, an 8GB micro SD card, and various mounting fixings.

The Foolish will be able to record at full HD 1080p at 30fps, or at 720p at 60fps while also being able to capture still images at 8megapixels. This action camera also features a 4x digital zoom. Control of the camera is done through one button filming, with another for taking still shots. A laser pointer is included to provide the desired line of site as well, because the designers clearly wouldn’t want owners to actually do something foolish. Video after the jump
