Brownells Takes Aim With Archery

BrownellsBrownells has been a firearms and shooting industry supplier for 75 years but this month it announced it extending its brand to bowhunters and target archers. The company looks to become one of the largest Internet retailers for all things archery with more than 10,000 products from the major brands in the archery industry.

“I think it’s great Brownells is serving the archery customer now,” said Pete Brownell, CEO of Brownells. “Many of us are bowhunters and competitors at Brownells, and when existing customers told us they wanted archery products from us, it made the decision to jump in with both feet an easy one. We’ve been serving outdoorsmen and women for 75 years; this is just another way for us to continue fulfilling their shooting-related needs.”

Shot at Survival

Survival-SlingshotThose preparing for the end of the world know to stock up on ammo – because once it is used up there won’t be more. As a backup there is always the Survival Slingshot, a multipurpose weapon that can shot slingshot balls and arrows. It features a whisker biscuit that allows a variety of arrows to be used.

It also has a rail system that can also hold a flashlight; while a compass will let you know what direction you’re headed. This certainly isn’t Bart Simpson’s or Dennis the Menace’s slingshot! More like something Rambo might use.

2014 Archery Trade Association Tradeshow Preview: Prois Hunting & Field Apparel for Women

ProisJanuary is truly a month of trade shows, which begins week with CES and continues next week with the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and SHOT Show in Las Vegas. While SHOT Show is where we expect to see the latest and greatest in hunting and shooting sport equipment, the 2014 Archery Trade Association Tradeshow will take place later next week in Nashville.

We’re not up for yet another show (and will be heading to Vegas), but have been hearing news of what attendees will likely see. This includes new products from Prois Hunting and Field Apparel for Women, including the new 2014 Women’s Artemis Competitive Archery Shooting Shirt from Prois (above left), and the new Archtach Down Jacket by Prois Hunting. So whether it is competition archery at the range or a day in the woods it sounds like Prois will have women archers covered this year.

Lil’ Archer Case

Ultra-Lite-Bow-CaseJust because a youth archer might have a smaller bow doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t get the same level of protection. Plano knows this and has introduced the Ultra-Lite Bow Case (Model 1108-00), which is constructed with the same expertise and features found in full-size models, but is designed with small bows in mind. It includes foam padding on the lid and base to secure the bow in place, while the PillarLock system provides another level of strength with two strategically located crush-resistant support pillars. At just about $20 it is a budget minded case that provides security for the bow.

Made in America: Bow It Up

Plano-Parallel-Limb-Bow-CasWhile a bow can bend that doesn’t mean it should have to be forced to fit a case. Plano’s new Parallel Limb Bow Case (Model 1144) is a case the offers plenty of room for storage for a bow, and adjusts to its shape as well. The plastic injection molded case is American made, and features cam-action type latches that secure the lid for a tight fit. An O-ring seal around the full perimeter insures that water and dust won’t get in.

The interior is seven inches deep and can accommodate multiple bows and quivers, and can hold six arrows. The black construction with yellow latches also has a serious look for those who take their archery seriously.

Get Your Leather(man) On

LeathermanLeatherman Tool Group recently acquired Seattle-based PocketToolX, and the results include a new line of multi-tool including the Cam Mulit-tool (above). These are designed to offer the functionality and dependability of Leatherman, but with fewer working parts. The Cam has been specifically designed for bow maintenance and arrives just in time for hunting season, but could be used by all archers – Green Arrow or otherwise.

Big Bang Arrow

Bow-MagArchery has gotten big thanks to movies and TV shows, and as such the typical arrow is much more than just a blade at the end of a shaft. Rac-Em-Bac is one company that has looked to create some arrows that are almost worthy of something you’d find in a comic book.

These include the new Preloaded Scent Arrowheads, which are available with 10 scents that can be used to attract game by masking all traces of human scent; the Bow Shot, which contains #7 steel shot that is ideal for small game and vermin; and for those looking for some extra bang, the Bow Mag.

The latter is a hollow plastic arrowhead that is fitted with a .38 special or .357 Magnum cartridge, which can certainly give the arrow some extra bang! Obviously check with local laws before using such a thing. Video after the jump

Bow Me Down

Archery is hot right now, thanks in no small part to movies such as Brave and The Hunger Games. And while getting started isn’t really that hard or expensive Canadian chiropractor Ron Green has devised a fitness game that can be used with an app to simulate shooting arrows. The result is BowBlade, which is far closer to actual archery than anything we’ve seen to date in a true video game. It works as a fitness device, but adds a gameplay element when combined with an iPhone and accompanying app.

It could be good for those who want to hone their skills, live in apartments (and thus can’t actually shoot real arrows) or just want to see if they can emulate Katniss before picking up a real bow. Video after the jump

Deca Sports Heads to Kinect

When the Kinect for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is released next month gamers will be able to compete in 10 sporting events from the single Deca Sports Freedom title. This one will feature controller free gaming, which should hopefully get players off the couch and get their hearts pumping as they take part in tennis, boxing, archery, paintball, beach volleyball, dodge ball, kendo, mogul skiing, snowboard cross and figure skating. We’re not sure how all these will work, but we like the sound of it.

DECA SPORTS FREEDOM is an exciting step forward for the DECA SPORTS franchise,” said Mike Pepe, Director of Marketing at Hudson Entertainment.  “We’re proud to embrace new technologies and innovations in gaming in our mission to deliver games that appeal to players of all ages and skill levels.”

The game, which is being published by Hudson Entertainment, will arrive with the release of the Kinect for Xbox 360 video game system on November 18.
