AA Thinks Bikes

AAThe British AA – equal to America’s AAA – has launched a Think Bike campaign that will provide drivers with stickers that could placed on sideview mirrors to remind them to watch for bikes.

BikeRadar reported that the campaign was launched after an AA survey of more than 17,500 drivers found that 93 percent sometimes found it hard to see cyclists and more than half admit to being surprised when a ‘cyclists appears from nowhere.’ Perhaps this program could eventually come to America.

Olympic Technology Spotlight: Cycling Hot Pants

Hot pants – as in short shorts – are really not something that comes to mind for cycling. But the “hot pants” developed byAdidas with help from British Cycling and Loughborough University could be the next big thing for track bike racers. These track suit bottoms are actually warm up pants that can help heat up the rider’s muscles prior to competition.

The ADIPOWER are reportedly similar to the tire warmers used in Formula 1 racing, and pre-heat the muscles. These hot pants feature battery-powered heat filaments that are strategically placed on core muscle groups and maintain the temperature between warm-up and the start. The pants even feature a quick release so the garments can be stripped off at the last second – much like stripper pants in a way, but if they make the difference on the track who is going to complain. There is a lot of technology that is being used in this summer’s Olympic Games and KineticShift is looking to spotlight much of it. In the water it can mean being water resistant and P2i has developed a liquid repellent nano-coating technology. The company has partnered with UK Sport, in conjunction with British Cycling and Sailing to provide this coating for bike components and sailing harnesses.

The company also worked with the Australian Canoe Slalom team (as shown in the video above) to provide protection for spray skirts.

What a Bike – the Wattbike

While summer is here and that means hitting the long and (hopefully) winding roads, the weather isn’t always so forgiving. When it comes time to head in doors there will be the Wattbike Trainer and Pro Bikes, the world’s first affordable indoor bikes that accurately measure a rider’s power.

Watt computers allow athletes to instantly see how much power (Watts) they are producing versus waiting on their heart rate to reach a certain point. Signed off by the English Institute of Sport as being accurate, it is the first indoor bike that has ever been endorsed by British Cycling and is widely used by UK and European elite athletes, sports bodies and professional sports teams as their preferred high performance cycle training device.

The founders of Wattbike first approached British Cycling in 2000 with the idea to create an indoor bike which accurately measures a range of high-performance parameters, and six years later the governing body was satisfied that the Wattbike met their criteria. As a result, today Wattbike remains the first and only indoor cycle trainer to be endorsed by British Cycling.
