The Cardboard Bike, which we first reported on last year, came about as inventor Izhar Gafni looked to transform the way bikes are produced and used. Now the Israeli-inventor looks to get the project rolling via Indiegogo. He’s has lofty goals and is looking to raise some $2 million to bring out this affordable bike that is truly made of cardboard, yet is durable and even waterproof.

We’ve been
pleased to see the near constant innovation and the accompanying evolution that comes with it in the realm of athletic head protection. Much has been made with sensors that can determine if an injury has occurred or even call for helmet when the wear suffers a head injury.
Of course preventing any injury at all is what the real purpose for wearing a helmet is and thus there has been a lot of innovation in the materials. There have been a number of new materials but Kranium is a helmet that takes a step back, namely looking at cardboard rather than something more complex like carbon fiber. The helmet is the invention of Royal College of Arts student Anirudha Surabhi, who devised the concept and created prototype that is 15 percent lighter than standard helmets but at the same time could absorb up to three times the impact energy during a collision. At this week’s Interbike we’ve seen bikes made of steel, titanium , aluminum and of course carbon fiber, not to mention bamboo. We’ve heard about bikes made of wood and now Izhar Gafni is working on a bike made of recycled cardboard.
While the bike still needs some traditional parts, such as tires, brakes and chain, the rest is made from cardboard! But that’s not the biggest deal. Gafni said the production cost is just $9. The idea is that the bike could be made cheaply and provided as a form of transportation for those in the developing world. Video after the jump
