Rudy Gets Cool With Airstorm

Rudy-AirstromSpring can be a time with wild weather and the Rudy Project is forecasting quite the Airstorm – its new road and mountain bike helmet. It features 16 front vents along with six rear “extractor” vents, which along with the internal crown architecture is meant to help hot air flow outwards to dissipate heat.

The helmet weighs just 260 grams, and features an adjustable “chassis and ring” structure to allow one-handed adjustment on the bike. It also features two sets of interchangeable and washable pads, plus a bug stop mesh protection system.

“Rudy Project has come a long way since we began developing helmets, and the Airstorm is a testament to that evolution and our engineers’ commitment,” said Paul Craig, president of Rudy Project North America. “By listening to our athletes and using that data to improve our design, we’ve come up with an incredible combination of features that’s sure to impress anyone who gives it a spin, plus the Airstorm is competitively priced for the benefits it packs.”

Speak Up

AudioPLUX“What did you say? I couldn’t hear you! That’s because I’m wearing headphones that block the outside world.”

We’ve all been there in one way or another, but Lou Tortola of Windsor, Canada is looking to change this with the AudioPLUX speaker system for cyclist. Tortola is now looking to Kickstarter to develop these speakers, which are meant to be “away from the ear” while still providing solid audio quality.

The idea is that these won’t suppress ambient sounds, but will still let you enjoy the tunes. Video after the jump

Smith at the Forefront

smith opticsSmith Optics has expanded into the helmet market for spring 2014, and will bring out three models, including an all-mountain helmet called the Forefront. The entire line up will make its official debut at Interbike next month, but Smith has announced some key details.

The helmet will feature an innovative material called Koroyd, which reportedly has better impact absorption than EPS and also allows ventilation directly through the material via a “tubular core” construction. Continue reading Smith at the Forefront

Brain Bucket Indeed

Helmets are often called brain buckets, but the SMART is actually a cycling helmet that is pretty darn smart. While still under development via an Indiegogo project, its developers hope to create a cycling helmet with an integrated heart rate sensor.

Instead of wearing a heart rate monitor strap this system would provide real time, accurate monitoring via a sensor located in the helmet. This same type of sensors are currently used by fighter pilots and astronauts, and the developers have placed these in a Lazer Genesis helmet. The information gathered by the SMART sensor can be sent in real time to a mobile phone, sports watch or cycling computer via ANT+ and Bluetooth. Video after the jump
