Pak a Flask

Water bottle and hydration system maker Hydrapak is a bit like mythical serpent-like chthonic water beast that possessed many heads, but whereas the Lernaean Hydra had many heads Hydrapak just offers many hydration options for athletes.

The latest offerings are its new soft flasks, which include the 12 ounce SF350 and the 16 ounce SF 500. Both of these already won in ISPO’s Performance Accessories category, and expand on the company’s five and eight ounce flasks.

The new flasks, which are designed to deliver liquid, gel or a mix, can be tucked into a cycling jersey pocket or used with the optional hand strap for running. These also feature larger filling port and shut off value to ensure that you don’t end up all wet while taking them on the go.

Hydrapak Packs in the Cool

Many efforts have been made to keep drinks cool in a cycling water bottle. And with the recent heat waves we’ve experience we can tell you that many of the efforts fall way short. Nothing is worse than warm sports drink.

But Hydrapak has looked to add PrimaLoft – a type of insulation that has been used in winter jackets to add warmth – to keep beverages cool and tasty. The Wooly Mammoth, which made its debut last year was such a hit that it sold out last season. Now the company has updated the bottle and will offer a new version this fall. This 20 ounce bike bottle will fit in most cages and features a flexible polypropylene body that is BPA free and can reportedly keep beverages ice age cold! Shimano Shifts Gears to Cycling Bags

If you know the name Shimano you either know the company’s cycling components or its fishing lures, but now the company is shifting gears, and will introduce a new line of products for next year – cycling bags. Our friends at BikeRadar are reporting that the company’s debut in the luggage category will arrive in October, so it won’t be on most wearers’ backs until next season, but this should certainly shake up the market a bit.

The bags will feature Shimano’s new Rider Fit Cross Harness system, which has the shoulder straps meet in the center of the chest instead of the traditional sternum strap or hip belt. According to Shimano this should provide a “body-hugging fit” that will be practically molded the wearer.

The bags are also being designed for use with hydrapak bladder, with models for off-road riding and in messenger configuration. The messenger bag is even branded the Osaka, after Shimano’s home city, suggesting that Shimano’s dedication to this new category is very much in the bag!

Nalgene ATB Bottle with Black Closure
The 32 oz version didn’t fit many cages, but the wide neck opening of the bottles made dropping in an ice cube no problem at all. Read the full review.

Specialized Purist
No bad taste, just pure water with this bottle, which mostly rinses clean. Read the full review.

BioGreen ProX
Want to use the same water bottle in a century? Most of the time you can, as the bottles aren’t so biodegradable – but the BioGreenX is made from 20 percent post industrial recycled plastic and should biodegrade in just two years. Read the full review.

Clean Bottle
Getting a bottle clean can sometimes be no easy task. Wouldn’t be easier if both the top and bottom came off? Oh wait, with the Clean Bottle they do! Read the full review.
