GameBook Let’s Golfers Get Social

Who needs a trip to the clubhouse to share their time on the green? The Golf GameBook app for iOS and Android allows golfers to record and share golf performances, photos and scorecards, and post them to the GolfBook Clubhouse or directly to social networking sites such as Facebook. Users can comment on friends’ games in real-time, use it as way to set up tee times and see who can make a round. With the app friends can even create leagues and tournaments. The only drawback is that users might tend to watch their handsets as much as the ball!

Exergy Tour Tracker App for Women’s Cycling Race

In cycling, women don’t get a ton of recognition. Few races are broadcast on TV, and there aren’t quite as many teams worldwide as there are for men’s cycling. Even if you the Exergy Tour cycling stage race going on this week throughout Southwestern Idaho won’t be broadcast near you, you can track the progress of female cyclists on the inaugural tour with the Exergy Tour Tracker app, available for iPhone, iPad and Android.

The app will provide live coverage of the women’s cycling race in Idaho.

“The unique ability to bring the inaugural Exergy Tour to a world-wide audience through Tour Tracker and its innovative mobile video platform speaks to Exergy’s vision to further engage corporate sponsors, media, spectators, athletes and fans,” said Heather Hill, marketing, communications and events director for the Exergy Tour, in a corporate statement.

“On site during the event, spectators will also be able to watch the live Tour Tracker video simulcast on the big screens – allowing fans to watch start-to-finish coverage every day of the Tour whether they are at work, out and about, on the course or at the finish line.”

Prior to the start of the race we loaded the Tour Tracker app. It lists participating teams but doesn’t yet have profiles on each of the riders. We like the “Cycling 101″ section under Extras, which explains cycling terms such as a tour, stage, time trial, neutral start, finish line, general classification, peloton, domestique and other terms commonly used in professional cycling.

Mobile Personal Training Looks to Bulk Up

Those who use mobile personal training will soon get to bulk up – at least in terms of the software they use to help to stay fit. This week Cybex International Inc., exercise equipment manufacturer, and PumpOne, professional personal training solutions developer, announced a partnership that will provide users of online and mobile fitness applications with increased access to Cybex technology and research.

“PumpOne is on the cutting edge of fitness technology, and Cybex is proud to partner with them to provide exercise and programming content that will help FitnessBuilder users maximize their workout results,” said Ray Giannelli, senior vice president of research and development for Cybex.

Apple Developing iOS Technology to Bring Head-to-Head Workouts

There is no arguing that Apple is a very competitive company, and hardcore Apple users could be considered also a bit competitive, so it is no surprise that last week it was reported that Apple is developing a new fitness technology that could be the biggest thing in competitive workouts since the first time some guy yelled “bring it.”

According to online reports, Apple outlined details in a patent filing dated from October that suggests the company is looking to create a head-to-head tracking system that could allow for real-time competition in workouts. For example two runners could wirelessly sync their respective devices – such as two iPods – together and go for a run, tracking each other’s pace, distance, heart rate, blood pressure and even calories burned. Imagine the possibility for digital bragging rights – “my heart rate was so much stronger than yours and I burned way more calories!”

CES 2012: Hit the Showers

After a workout it is time to hit the showers, and now you can enjoy some music while you get clean. At CES this week iDevices introduced its iShow, a water resistant, Bluetooth-enabled speaker that can stream music from portable devices. And while it is the “i” in the name, an Apple device isn’t required. It will stream directly from any device that offers Bluetooth, including a PC or Android device, making it ideal for use in the shower, or just at the beach or by the pool. It features a 200-foote range, and runs for 15 hours on three AA batteries. Press Release after the jump

CES 2012: Kinomap Your Ride

When we ride our bikes on the road we ride where we want to go, and while most riders appreciate some directions and even a tip or two as to where to ride, chances are everyone has that special ride. So why not share it? If your friends can come to ride with you, with Kinomap, which was shown at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show, you can record a course, upload it and then share it.

Unlike other virtual riding programs, which are built upon courses the companies decide to give you, this one is about community.

“Currently Kinomap is available for download and playback on the iPad and iPhone,” Laurent Desmons, CEO and founder of Kinomap told KineticShift.com. “The iOS devices can sync with existing monitors when the bike is on the trainer. When those devices arrive for the Android, we’ll have a version for that platform as well.”

US Army to Deploy Smartphones

While the troops are coming home, or mostly have come home from Iraq, a large presence of U.S. soldiers still remains in the field around the world. The time in Iraq and Afghanistan no doubt made it clear to military planners as to what technology worked and more importantly what likely needed improvement.

Last week The Army Times reported “Army expects to field smartphones next year,” and this will include Army-issued handsets. According to the story these will include a secure version of the Android operating system, which will get certification from the National Security Agency. Additionally, the iPhone and iPad iOS is being considered as another option. Continue reading US Army to Deploy Smartphones
