On the Double

Double-BevelSpyderco has you fixed for folding blades with the Double Bevel, which draws its name from its most distinguishing characteristic—its unique double-ground blade. As with all Spyderco folders, the Double Bevel’s VG-10 stainless steel blade features the maker’s Trademark Round Hole for ambiidextrous one-handed opening, while the flat-ground section offers a distal taper that terminates in an Americanized tanto-style point for an exceptional balance of tip strength and sharpness. The tip is also full-flat-ground for superior edge geometry and low-friction cutting performance. This is a pocket knife that will get the job done.

The Sage Series Speaks

Sage-SeriesSpyderco’s Sage Series is not just another line of folding knives. These feature an innovative lock mechanism that has helped define modern folding knife technology, and each member of the Sage family shares the same basic design profile and unifying features like a flat-ground, leaf-shaped CPM S30V blade, an ergonomic handle with textured forefinger choil and thumb ramp, and a reversible tip-up wire clip.

The Sage3 recognizes one of his most significant inventions: the Bolt Action Lock, which was designed by Blackie Collins, a legend in the knife industry. This locking mechanism consists of a spring-loaded steel bolt that wedges between a ramp on the back of the blade tang and the inside of the handle back strap when the blade is opened. Retracting a sliding button attached to the bolt releases the lock, allowing the blade to close safely without the user’s fingers crossing the path of the blade edge.

This line also supports a worthy cause, and proceeds from the sale of every Sage Series folder are donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, Colorado Chapter.

Cultural Blade

Hungarian-FolderKnife maker Spyderco has developed its Ethnic Series to pay homage to the distinctive knives associated with cultures from around the world. The Hungarian Folder is just one such example, and it was created with design insight from Hungarian architect Szakonyi Gábor.

The result captures the graceful lines of the traditional “fejesgörbe” (“header curved”) folding knife from Central Europe. Szakonyi drafted the original design for the Hungarian on paper before having it translated into steel by a custom knifemaker. The heart of this Hungarian Folder is the premium CTS XHP blade, which features a long, straight spine that tapers gently to meet the sweeping, curved cutting edge, while the trademark Spyderco Round Hole provides swift, positive one-handed opening with either hand.

Spyderco Goes Szabo

Spyderco-SzaboWe see a lot of unique product names but the Spyderco Szabo folding knife gets its name not from some far off land, but rather its creator Laci Szabo, a law enforcement officer, a veteran U.S. Marine, and a word-class martial artist. The visionary knife designer created a folding blade that reflects his philosophies regarding folding knife design as it applies to both utility and personal defense. Its large size creates a commanding presence and offers increased reach when used with fencing-style skills.

The scimitar-shaped blade has a long, gently curving belly to maximize cutting power, while leaving the tip well centered to support point-oriented tactics. The handle is constructed of full stainless steel liners capped by black Cubic Check carbon fiber/G-10 laminate scales while the blade features a non-reflective titanium carbonitride coating. This year has seen the introduction of the all-new all-black edition that is better suited to tactical applications.

But you don’t need to be Special Forces to get your hands on one, and anyone in the field or camping can benefit from this lightweight and incredibly durable blade that promises to provide a secure, non-slip grip.

Domino Flip

SpydercoThe Spyderco Domino is the latest in the company’s line of flipper knives. Designed by Eric Glesser, this performance-driven knife offers a minimalist profile with refined ergonomics. Its trademarked Round Hole is positioned to offer optimal leverage and is supported by special ball-bearing washers in the pivot that reduce friction. This provides a smooth, reliable opening; and in the open position the flipper practically disappears into the grip-friendly contours of the handle.

Made of precision machined CTS- XHP stainless steel the Domino’s blade features a full-flat grind for superior edge geometry and a distal taper with an acute point. It is mated to a handle that consists of a solid titanium scale on one side and a titanium liner and carbon fiber/G-10 laminate scale on the other, where the solid titanium scale forms the foundation of the Domino’s sturdy Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L). This is knife that is worth flipping for.

Spyderco Introduces the Puukko

Based on the traditional Finnish blades for use in the woods – where a good blade really mattered – Spyderco has introduced the Puukko. This PlainEdge CPM-S30V Scandinavian ground blade blends together equal parts artistic expression, traditional tool with modern blade steel and high tech cutting features. The Spyderco/Tuominen Puukko offers a single curving cutting edge and a flat level spine with a rounded wood handle, while the level blade spine and lack of choil allow positioning the thumb directly on the spine to concentrate force and leverage forward and downward. SIA: Spyderco May Be Able to ‘Assist’ You

What may seem to be an odd place for a knife company, Spyderco of Golden, CO, had a booth at the SIA show this year featuring most of their models. One knife in particular caught our eyes, not for any other reason than how it might help you or I our of a backcountry ‘situation’. On the surface, the Assist looks to be just a regular, single bladed knife, but it has so much more to offer. Continue reading SIA: Spyderco May Be Able to ‘Assist’ You
