Tent-sion

Tension30Since the dawn of mankind tents have pretty much remained the same: a pole holds up the entire thing. There have been solutions to refining the system but most still revolve around a tent pole! Setting up a tent can thus cause some tension around the camp site.

However, Brooks-Range takes the concept of “Tension” in a different direction with a tent that sets up easier and reduces the stress involved. While the Tension 30 Tent doesn’t completely ditch the poles it does lessen the reliance on how these hold up the tent and more importantly does so by providing more space.

It does so by featuring a single carbon pole and two cross poles that provides headroom and creates an open space inside. Best of all this means a large tent for two people that weighs just a fraction of similar sized tents. More space, less weight and fewer poles – that might mean less tension thanks to Tension in the poles.

Aescention

AesentEven the most serious “outdoorsman” probably wants a little creature comforts when sleeping in the wilds. After all who really wants to sleep on the cold, hard ground? If having a little cushion under your sleeping bag is your thing, then the Aescent tent, which is being developed via a Kickstarter campaign, might be for you.

This four man tent features an inflatable mattress built into the base. Instead of a being just an air mattress on the floor, this is actually a series of intertwined compartmentalized chambers, which provides a more supportive sleeping surface – and that could help leave you fresh for another day in the wilds. Serious Tent

Cabela-Ultimate-Alaknak-TenWhen we think of tents we think of a tarp that is held up by a stick. That’s probably more roughing it than we’d like, but the Cabela’s Ultimate Alaknak Tent has us rethinking what one (or for that matter a dozen) can put in a tent. At nearly $1,500 this is one expensive tent, but it offers 13×27 feet of space, more than many studio apartments. It can sleep a dozen people, offers three multi-panel windows along with an attached awning. It is held up by 10 sturdy tent poles and features a waterproof polyester material to provide those inside from the elements. After camping in this tent you might not want to go home.

Shoes to Shelter

Walking-ShelterYou can walk to the camp site, or you can decide that you’ve reached it when you are wearing the Walking Shelter shoes. Australian design collective Sibling has devised these new shoes that transform from shoes to a tent in just minutes.

In truth this is currently just a prototype and it is as much a shapeless bag as an actual tent, but does make us wonder about the possibilities of “wearing” our shelter when off hiking.

Camp Garbage

Glad-TentCamping is supposed to be getting back to nature, but sometimes people camp out at music festivals or other places and create a whole lot of garbage in the process. Sometimes the tent is so trashed that it ends up in the garbage. But Fast Company reported last week that Glad – yes, the maker of garbage bags – is reportedly working on a disposable tent that turns into a garbage bag.

While we know not everyone will love the idea of a single use tent, we do think this could be a good way to ensure that campsites and those outdoor festivals aren’t totally trashed. Video after the jump

A Bit Torrent

Winter is hopefully in the rear view mirror but given how it is trying to hang on could be reason enough to consider the Torrent 2P tent from Easton Mountain Products if you are early spring camper. This is actually designed to be a full year tent as it features a double wall construction that is hermetically sealed to keep blowing dust and even snow out. And yet it is made of durable materials that are still lightweight. Continue reading A Bit Torrent

Wedge Issue

We’ve seen no shortage of innovative tent designs, and Heimplanet has impressed us with its geodesic inflatable Cave tent, which his ideal for those looking to take the family – or several friends – to the woods. Now the company has created something a little more compact with the inflatable Wedge, a tent made for two! The company says setting it only requires for users to “roll out, inflate, finished.” There is no ripcord, no semi-rigid poles to assemble, no hooks or gussets. Just inflate, stake and shelter is ready – instant campsite.

Cloud-Based Tent

The high-tech world is moving to the cloud, but so too may those looking to camp out. And while maybe it isn’t exactly the “clouds” UK-based tent maker Tentsile has introduced the “Stingray,” which will get you off the ground at night. Currently being refined through a Kickstarter project the Tentsile Stingray is being viewed as ideal for flooded terrain or other areas where the ground is otherwise unsuitable for a traditional tent, but we like to think of it as a penthouse for the campsite!
