Sunday Q&A: David Mayer of Clean Bottle Comes Clean

If you’ve watched a mountain stage of the Tour de France you’ve probably seen David Mayer, but then again it could be anyone inside that water bottle costume. While Mayer is owner and designer of the Clean Bottle – the water bottle that unscrews from the bottom as well as top for better cleaning— he still actually “suits up” and runs along cyclists dressed as large bottle.

But in addition to being the guy in the suit, Dave is quite the innovator and he spoke to KineticShift to tell us what’s he working on next – and it isn’t another suit.

KineticShift: A lot of companies have tried to step in and offer solutions to ensuring the water bottles don’t get moldy, but what do you think the Clean Bottle offers over some of the other solutions?
Dave Mayer: Good question! The Clean Bottle is the only water bottle with removable caps that allow you to clean out the bottom of your bottle. Air drying is super fast but the Clean Bottle is also dishwasher safe if you want to go that route. Even the nozzle is removable! We made the Clean Bottle out of BPA free recyclable plastic, and we donate 10 percent of profits to eco friendly charities so our bottle is clean on every level!

KS: How well does the Clean Bottle tackle sports drinks, which tend to remain behind even after washes?
DM: The Clean Bottle is a champ when it comes to cleaning out sport drink residue. We have users going on two years with the same bottle because Clean Bottles don’t retain sports drink flavors. We have even heard of people using their Clean Bottles for dispensing pancake batter and then turning around the same day and using their bottle on a bike ride or hike.

KS: Now with your new product The Runner you’ve provided a way for athletes to carry their belongs. What do you think this says about our society that we need money, keys, and of course our phones everywhere we go?
DM: Our society is getting used to being plugged in 24/7 and The Runner is a reflection of that trend. People like the freedom cell phones offer to be spontaneous while retaining safety. They also like to listen to music and use their apps to track their run. I developed the runner because I saw an opportunity to enhance that freedom by consolidating all of my running accessories into one easy to use package. When I am out on a three hour run I want to have the peace of mind I can stay hydrated and fueled up while having the ability to contact someone if I run into trouble. The Runner allows you to extend your daily work out while maintaining your safety.

KS: Any other ideas for new and innovative products that solve these simple yet annoying problems we face while trying to be active?
DM: Right now we are finishing up our design for stainless steel bottle dubbed The Square. It is the first metal bottle with a removable bottom and looks absolutely stunning. We chose the square profile not only for looks, but also because it allows us to reduce wasted space when we ship the bottles, in return reducing our carbon footprint. We have started taking pre-orders and expect to ship out The Square in late Spring or early Summer.

KS: Finally, can we expect to see the Clean Bottle accompanied by The Runner in major cycling races this year? In other words, will there be another costume?
DM: No plans yet for a life sized Runner, but you never know!

Thank you Dave for talking to us. Keep on running!
