From Sport Techie: #SportsInSTEM Series: Applying Sports to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education Issues
In recent years, the United States has fallen behind other nations with educating students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Only 16 percent of U.S. high school students are proficient in math and actively pursuing STEM careers. In a world run by technology, where the majority of jobs in the near future will require advanced education in technical fields, these trends are troubling and must be reversed. The Hole Nine Yards and Much More!

Larry-GroginWe recently heard about a particularly extraordinary Boston Marathon Story, and it involves Larry Grogin, a 59-year athlete who took part in last year’s Boston Marathon. On April 13 he’ll set out to run 250 miles from his home town of Franklin Lakes, N.J. all the way to the Boston Marathon and average about 32 miles a day. A long-time volunteer for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, an organization founded by Paul Newman that helps children suffering with serious illness, Grogin was running for his favorite charity that day and was just turning the corner toward the finish when the first bomb exploded.

“I have run hundreds of marathons all over the world, but the Boston Marathon is like no other. Filled with patriotic messaging, people saluting, crowds cheering and chanting “U-S-A”…it is hard to describe the incredible vibe,” he said.

Like so many, he did not get to finish the marathon that day and has a very hard time forgetting the horrible unfolding of the day’s events. Having been told by the police to get away from the scene, Grogin was unable to help victims of the tragedy and suffers from tremendous “Survivor’s Guilt.” He is, however, inspired by the remarkable children at Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and has now made it his mission to help raise funds for a cause so dear to his heart. Back to Boston

BostonDespite last year’s tragic and cowardly terrorist attack on the Boston Marathon the race will go on! Even if you can’t be there to run in Boston you can be there in spirit. This month B.A.A. (Boston Athletic Association) launched the Boston Marathon World Run app that virtually connects runners around the world and their social networks with the 2014 Boston Marathon. The mobile app, which is available on the web as well as for Android and iOS devices, allows runners to participate in the athletic spirit of the event regardless of ability or geography.

Participants, whether individually or in teams, can log miles alongside past champions and elite athletes and can achieve their self-determined running goals by April 21 to receive bib numbers and digital training and finisher badges. Boston Marathon World Run is also encouraging runners to contribute to One Fund Boston through voluntary online contributions, which will be updated in real time.

Pasadena Marathon Cut in Half

Pasadena-MarathonFollowing last month’s terrorist attack on the Boston Marathon security had other races has been greatly increased. This isn’t just at running races, and some cycling events are banning hydration packs, while back packs are being banned at almost all events.

However, the Pasadena Marathon will still go on – but only as a half marathon, while still keeping the name. The Pasadena City Council decided not to issue a permit for a marathon as just 813 finishers last year was reportedly too small to justify closing down the necessary parts of the city. We can’t help but wonder if this isn’t also fallout from the attacks in Boston.

Might other cities look for excuses to reduce the size of events?

Treadmill Marathoner Looks to Set Record

There is the loneliness of the long distance runner, but those looking to run a marathon can at least take in 26.2 miles of scenery. And then there is the loneliness of the long distance runner who runs on a treadmill.

As Competitor noted, marathoners Michael Wardian and Kim Duclos are attempting to set new world records for the fastest treadmill marathon at the John Hancock Sports and Fitness Expo on Boston Marathon weekend, April 14 and 15. They will do so using Virtual Runner Software technology from Outside Interactive. The reason is simple too reports Competitor: “Because of its point-to-point net downhill layout, the fabled 26.2-mile course that runs from Hopkinton to Boston will never be home to the marathon world record, but that doesn’t mean Boston will forever be excluded from the running record books.” Continue reading Treadmill Marathoner Looks to Set Record
