2013 CES: Fork Lift

What is the best way to stay fit? We think not getting out of shape in the first place. And the best way to lose weight is not to put in on. One way to better manage weight gain can be better managing how much you eat. There are endless diets, scales but now the developers of the HAPIfork have another thought.

At CES they showed off the digital fork that was developed for clinical use to encourage slower eating, and thus giving the body time to digest and feel full from more moderate food intake. There is even a soup spoon attachment as well. Video after the jump

2013 CES: Semi-Tough

There are rugged devices and then there are truly rugged, will survive the end of the world rugged. For most people the latter is a bit overkill. That’s why GammaTech at CES this week introduced its semi-rugged yet ultra-mobile tablet PC (UMPC), the Durabook Model CA10.

This device still looks like it could stand up to a serious adventure, and it features a 10.1-inch TFT LCD display with resistive multi-touch screen panel. It meets the Military Standard 810G and IP43 standard for drop, shock, dust and water resistance, while also offering hot swappable dual-battery design with up to eight hours of power. There is even quick menu support for easy operability. Continue reading 2013 CES: Semi-Tough

2013 CES: Marley and You

House of Marley isn’t a name we’ve thought a lot about when it comes to lifestyle products, but the company plans to change that in 2013. It has announced a new collection of earth-friendly, premium quality personal audio and lifestyle products made with a purpose and will debut this line at this week’s 2013 International CES. The company is debuting its use of upcycled RE.WIND fabric, which is comprised of reclaimed hemp and organic cotton, combined with fibers from recycled water bottles (rPET).

While obviously we don’t expect all of Marley’s products to have that fitness use, although many are good for those with active lives, it is interesting to see that the tech world is embracing what we’ve already been seeing in the fitness space.

KineticShift Goes For Three

It was three years ago at CES that KineticShift officially launched. In that time we’ve filled more than 220 pages of news, show reports, reviews and interviews. We’ve logged countless miles running, on bikes and on the slopes. We’ve tested several dozen products and hopefully have gotten healthier and fitter for it all.

This week we head back to Las Vegas for the 2013 International CES, and that is just the beginning. Throughout the month we’ll report on the latest news and products coming out of SHOT Show, SIA Snow Show, NAIAS (Detroit Auto Show) and Outdoor Retailer Show. And there is much, much more to come. It has been a great three years and we look forward to what 2013 has to offer!

Digital Health and Fitness Expands at 2013 CES

Fitness is once again going to be a part of the International CES the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced this week as more than 215 exhibitors will showcase the latest in digital health and fitness technologies at January.

“Health and fitness technology is booming, and will continue its dominance on the CES show floor with the future of fitness tech that combines data aggregation, social elements and convenience,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. “Health, wellness and technology converge at the International CES where there are solutions for diagnosing, monitoring and treating illnesses with games that let people take responsibility for their own health and reinforce healthy behavior.”

It is hard to believe that CES is just two months away, but KineticShift will be there celebrating our third year covering the show and fitness technology.

Pedal Power Your Phone

We’ve seen all sorts of gizmos and gadgets that could be attached to a bicycle, including ways to power your mobile phone while you go the distance. But what if you need to juice up the handset yet have nowhere to go?

One solution is the new Power Box, a pedal powered generator, from K-Tor, which won a CES Innovations Design & Engineering Showcase Honor back in 2011. The new device allows users to pedal as they would on a bike to charge devices that require 20W and less. While it won’t offer as much of a workout as actually going for a ride, it could be more practical than those treadmill or bicycle desks that we’ve seen. This could be something put under a desk or table and basically turn a little burn into energy for the phone.

K-Tor also has introduced the Pocket Socket Hand Crank Generator, which as the name suggests is a hand crank that can power devices. The video below sums up this new product very well. Video after the jump

CES 2012: Olympus Gets Tough Again

There was no shortage of rugged cameras at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. From Olympus it wasn’t just rugged, it was tough, as in the Tough TG-320, the latest in the company’s line of go anywhere cameras. This one is ideal for the budget conscious, as it will cost just $179.99 when it arrives later this year.

As with most rugged point-and-shoot digital cameras it is waterproof, shock-proof, freeze-proof dust-proof and still offers 14megapixel resolution. It will feature a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom with a 3D photo mode, and HDMI port for easy connectivity to a TV. While it can’t go deep underwater, reportedly only to about 10 feet, it will still survive a little water, which can go a long way.
