Skating or boating? You want to skate but you’d like to get out on the water. Well, you can always do what Bob Burnquist did and float a skateboard ramp on Lake Tahoe. This particular ramp was constructed as part of Visit California’s Dream365 tourism campaign.
We can only wonder what Pierre de Coubertin would think? He was the founder of the International Olympic Committee and it was his vision that resulted in the modern Olympics, but he was also very much a product of the late 19th century. So perhaps the news that skateboarding might be added to further Olympic Games might not have sat well with de Coubertin – yet he also knew that the games had to evolve with the times.
At any rate, Tony Hawk told Larry King – as reported by ESPN – that he’d like to see skateboarding in the games and that it was likely that the IOC would add the sport to the 2020 Games. Given that the Hawkman will be 52 if and when this happens we’re not sure he’ll get to go for the Gold, but it would be interesting to see how the Summer Olympics might evolve.

A helmet can help protect the wearer’s head in case of a fall or accident, but it can’t call for help. What is an individual to do if he or she falls while out alone and far from home? ICEdot (In Case of Emergency) is working to provide a solution, and the company has partnered with SenseTech LLC of Denver to develop and launch a helmet-mounted impact sensor.
In the event of an accident the sensor determines the crucial forces, and can activate communications on the wearer’s smartphone to send a request for help. Skateboarding has typically been called “sidewalk surfing” but over the last couple of years we’ve seen more and more attempts to take skateboarding off road. The latest attempt is from Rockboard, which showed off its Descender board earlier this year at Toy Fair in New York. Video after the jump
Quicksilver, a brand known among surfers, watermen, skateboarders and snowboarders, is prepping its fall 2012 line for a newly launched mountain division. The line will be on show at Outdoor Retailer and SIA this month.
The fall line includes 16 pieces including insulator jackets, down parkas, fleeces, bombers, windbreakers and shells that range in price fom $80 to $250. In an early look Quicksilver revealed a photo of its Ghost Tree jacket, shown in orange.
While many shopping malls and other community establishments have banned skateboarding, this fall you’ll be able to grind your way with Tony Hawk during an upcoming tour. The Hawkman won’t be making personal appearances however, but this could be the next best thing as Activision is taking Tony Hawk: Shred on a national mall tour – but totally unlike those old mall tours with Tiffany and Debbie Gibson.
The 10-city Mall Tour kicked off this past weekend, and is giving fans a chance to jump on the game’s unique board controller and experience the thrill of skate and snowboarding. The best part is that no one will chase you away for being possessed to skate.
