Snowboarding in Decline

SnowboardingLast month we reported that the participation in alpine skiing actually dropped 19 percent last winter and overall snow sports participation was down by three percent, according to a new report from SnowSport Industries America (SIA). Now comes news that snowboarding is in a major decline as well.

A quote from the Boston Globe might sum it up best: “For every 25 pair of skis we sell, there’s maybe one snowboard. It used to be 50-50,” said Mike Murphy, Sanchez’s boss at Sportworks in Duxbury.

That’s not good news, and we hope this winter will bring more people to the slopes.

Less People Hitting the Powder?

snowboardcrashLess people are taking part in winter sports. According to a recent national report from the SnowSports Industries America (SIA), participation in alpine skiing actually dropped 19 percent last winter and overall snow sports participation was down by three percent. While some states, such as Utah, are seeing growth the national picture far different.

This report further suggests that the lessons for skiers has been flat, while season pass and even multi-day ticket sales have been down. This isn’t good news for the snow sport industry at all, but could be attributed to the recent mild winters.

It’s Snow Time in Washington

SIA-NSAAThe snow sports industry has seen some ups and downs the last couple of years, and last month board members from SnowSports Industries America (SIA), the snow sports industry’s member-owned trade association, along with National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) board members, joined forces in Washington, D.C. to discuss how to grow participation and to lobby around regulatory and trade issues currently affecting the snow sports industry.

While the meeting looked at efforts to expand snow sport participation programs, including Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month and Bring a Friend Challenge, some other important issues were discussed.

SIA and NSAA spent the day on Capitol Hill meeting with Members of Congress and their key staff members focusing on five main issues – Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, Miscellaneous Tarriff Bill, TSA Policy for Avalanche Air Bag Canisters, Water Rights for Land Resorts and Immigration and Visas. SIA 2013: Not a Combat Helmet but a Combyn Helmet

At the SIA Snowshow in Denver last week Giro introduced a new “soft-shell” helmet for the snowsport industry that can survive multiple impacts and still keep the wearer protected. The Combyn helmet can flex and bend under pressure and like “Stretch Armstrong” return to its original shape.

The helmet reportedly utilizes a patent-pending liner made with foam to absorb impact, with two outer layers of foam that are designed to take both “high and low energy shots” and be flexible yet durable. The helmet features eight vents, and removable goggle retailer. It will comply with the CE EC 1077 safety standard. It will be available in August for next year’s winter sport season.

SIA Looks to Recycle Old Gear

The pristine mountains often don’t look so pristine at the end of the season. And while winter turns to spring often much of the outdoor gear that won’t survive another season all too often ends up in landfills. But now the SnowSports Industries America’s Snow Sports Recycling Program has looked to repurpose much of that old material and help utilize it in construction or even landscaping, and in some cases into new products.

The Snow Sports Recycling Program has reportedly collected more than 350 tons of skis, snowboards, boots, poles and helmets – and that’s just in the Denver and Salt Lake City metro areas!

So far material such as composite lumber is being reused to make decking, furniture, store and tradeshow fixtures; while other materials are being recycled into stackable blocks and cultured rock for the landscaping industry. Continue reading SIA Looks to Recycle Old Gear

Snowsports Participation Report Numbers

Just because winter is a time to bundle up with extra layers, doesn’t mean all of us are hibernating. Many of us get out and burn calories on the slopes, ice and take part in other outdoor adventures. SIA, the SnowSports Industries America organization, released its 2012 SIA Snow Sports Participation Report. The top finding shows that 6.9 percent of Americans participate in snow sports, and burn 332 million calories while they do it. Continue reading Snowsports Participation Report Numbers

Ski Retriever Helps Find Lost Skis

While probably not much of a problem this season, in years with deep snow or when regions get lots of natural snow, some skiers might find themselves trying to find lost skis. This no doubt cuts down on the fun. It seems like a small problem, but enough that Ski Retriever has come to the rescue with a homing system.

This is simple enough, where a homing tag attaches to each ski (or snowboard) and a radio-based receiver unit picks up the signal. LED and audio prompts will let a user know when they’re getting close – sort of a treasure hunt on the slopes. The system reportedly works up to 400 feet, while conditions including depth under the white stuff and weather can affect the distance.

The company has reported positive response since the product was introduced in January at the SIA Snow Show in Denver. This could be a case where a problem was solved that people didn’t they had – until they tried to dig out their skis!
