Throwing Down

 httpv://youtu.be/tOjKfqeiQvo

We’ve all been there.  A mechanical problem on a bike can ruin and ride and you just want to throw it. When you’re a pro – as in professional cyclist – you should know to contain yourself, but then again if you’re a pro you’re not paying for your bike! Marcel Kittel (above), who suffered a crash in this week’s Tirreno-Adriatico, might have the best thrown down yet! More throwdowns after the jump

Regular Cycling is More Than Just Fun; It is Beneficial to Your Health!

Cycling-Sponsored-PostCycling has become more popular since the success of the British team at the 2012 Olympics in London. Sir Bradley Wiggins won last year’s Tour de France as well, adding to the sport’s recognition in the media. A survey by Sport England in 2012 found that uptake of cycling had been increasing over the previous five years, even before the Olympics.

There is no doubt that cycling is fun, but it also has many health benefits. However, preparation is essential. Cyclists should obtain the right bike and some helpful sports equipment like helmets before they embark on any significant journey. Selecting an appropriate bicycle will help prevent potential injuries, so using a racing bike on a dirt track is probably not a good idea. Helmets and other protective gear can minimize the impact of any fall or collision. Whether cycling in a city or the countryside, there are many interesting places to cycle in the UK for people to choose from, although many of the longer routes may require extra planning. POC Tempor Debuts at Olympics

At yesterday’s 2012 Olympic Games Bradley Wiggins of the UK and Kristin Armstrong of the USA took rode to the gold in the men’s and women’s Olympic Time Trial in cycling. Their efforts likely turned heads, but so did the new helmet that was donned by the Swedish riders.

This was the POC Tempor time trial helmet, which was developed by the Swedish company with the help of 2008 Olympic time trial silver medalist Gustav Erik Larsson. Larsson and teammate Emma Johansson each wore the helmet, and while they didn’t share the podium at these games, the helmet’s designers believe it could “promote maximum performance and aerodynamics, without sacrificing safety properties.” Continue reading POC Tempor Debuts at Olympics

TrainingPeaks for Sky

This week the British Team Sky Pro Cycling announced that it has extended its agreement with TrainingPeaks to be the official supplier of training software for the 2012.This will allow Team Sky to continue to collect and monitor heart rate and power from each individual rider during training and racing, and utilize it in TrainingPeaks by team coaches and staff. Riders can futher adjust their own training program and regiment based on the fitness trends shown in the software.

It will be interesting to see how it helps Olympic gold medalist Bradley Wiggins, who will likely be racing in the London Olympics this summer, as well as current world champion and 2011 Tour de France green jersey winner Mark Cavendish this season. With both hoping for a potentially “golden” summer we’re sure they’ll be spending a lot of time using this data. While it probably is not as much time as they spend on the bike, but still enough to show that software is indeed changing the way athletes train; and that is helping the way they perform.
