Taking the Edge for TT
Time trial and triathlon bikes are set up quite differently from road bikes, and this can make mounting a cycling computer a bit of an issue. Fortunately where there is a problem someone sets up with a solution. In this case it is K-Edge, which just announced the release of the TT Mount, which can accommodate Garmin’s ¼ turn interface and places the popular GPS cycling computer between the bar extensions, so riders can glance down and see the information and yet focus on the ride.
Aero Up There
The Sky is truly the limit, and while this year’s Tour de France is in the rearview mirror you can now try to take flight with Kask’s new lightweight aero helmet. The Infinity was developed with Team Sky and ridden by the team at this year’s big show in France. It was on the head of Chris Froome when he pushed it to the limit in the two time trials and by the rest of the Sky riders in the team time trial.
The 270-gram helmet, which will be available in two sizes and three colors (for those who don’t like Sky’s blue) combines the aero advantages of Kask’s time trial helmets with the lightness and ventilation of its road racing helmets. The Infinity allows the rider to adjust the vents from open — providing maximum ventilation — to closed for maximum aerodynamics. The adjustment can be made while riding without removing the helmet.
The only downside is that it won’t arrive in the U.S. until January.
Trial of the Century
While $5,400 could buy a decent used car it can buy one fantastic time trial bike. The new Cervelo P3 features a Dura-Ace 9000 mechanical group, Maguar’s RT6 hydraulic aero brakes and features a new frame design that is stiffer and promises to be very aerodynamic. This bike looks ready to time travel.

In every cyclists efforts to trim grams, there comes a time when a few accessories, like a hydration system, are deemed essential. Now time trailers and triathletes, among other cyclists, can shave a few grams from their hydration system. Interbike Preview: POC Enters Road With Time Trial Helmet
We first got a glimpse of the POC Tempor helmet at the Olympics earlier this summer, and now the helmet’s designers have announced that it will make its American debut at next month’s Interbike trade show. Since we haven’t seen it up close we can’t comment on many of the details, but POC Sports noted that “the helmet provides the highest possible safety thanks to the appropriate thickness of the liner at exposed areas around the helmet. The ventilation system is optimized with regard to impact absorption without neglecting air flow and aerodynamics. In addition, the fluorescent color increases visibility. The Tempor helmet has overlapping upper and lower shells and includes a detachable visor.”
Hopefully we’ll get to try it on for size in Vegas.
POC Tempor Debuts at Olympics
At yesterday’s 2012 Olympic Games Bradley Wiggins of the UK and Kristin Armstrong of the USA took rode to the gold in the men’s and women’s Olympic Time Trial in cycling. Their efforts likely turned heads, but so did the new helmet that was donned by the Swedish riders.
This was the POC Tempor time trial helmet, which was developed by the Swedish company with the help of 2008 Olympic time trial silver medalist Gustav Erik Larsson. Larsson and teammate Emma Johansson each wore the helmet, and while they didn’t share the podium at these games, the helmet’s designers believe it could “promote maximum performance and aerodynamics, without sacrificing safety properties.” Continue reading POC Tempor Debuts at Olympics

Giro Introduces New Aero Helmet Design
Aerodynamic helmet design has reached a new standard with Giro’s introduction of the Air Attack. Unlike anything resembling current TT designs, Giro’s new lid has a mostly solid outer shell with only six vents. Yet despite its oven-like appearance, the Air Attack makes good use of its internal channel design while the rider is moving. That said, some have questioned its ability to vent well in slow, high-intensity efforts such as prolonged climbs. Cervelo P5 Makes Big Debut
While the athletes are the serious, Cervelo proved once again it is worthy of the Ironman competitions. The new P5 made its debut at the Ironman Melbourne last week and it brought several riders to excellent showings including two podium positions with Rachel Joyce (current ITU Long Course Champion) and Frederik Van Lierde (winner of the 2011 Ironman Nice and Abu Dhadi) placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. The P5 also made its debut appearance in the 7km time trial stage of the Criterium International with Garmin-Barracuda’s Dave Zabriskie finishing 7th in the time trial stage.
Cervélo Offers More Details on the P5
Earlier this week we got a few details and video on the Cervélo P5 triathlon/time trial bike. Now the full details are available on the highly-anticipated bike.
As we mentioned, the frameset features a BBright bottom bracket. The frameset also includes skin surfaces tuned for each AeroZone to optimize airflow and make the P5 aerodynamic. Cervélo reports the new P5 frameset shaves up to 30 seconds in a 40-kilometer time trial. A compliment to the BBright bottom bracket, ComfortPly technology removes unnecessary material to reduce vibration and improve ride quality.
First Look: Cervelo P5
This week Cervelo offered a closer look at the new P5 Tri/Time Trial aero bike. What we know so far is that one will be UCI legal, and ready for World Tour competition, while the other will be built to for triathlons. In either confirmation the P5 will include the Bbright asymmetrical bottom bracket, fully hidden internal routing of the cables, including for electronic shifting and a new braking system.
The video below will provide a few more details. The bike will reportedly arrive next month, and while it won’t come cheap, it will certainly be one that will turn heads!
