Dab It

BikedabsClipless pedals are a misnomer because these are the ones you clip into – but are called clipless because these lack the cages for the shoes. With that in mind clipless pedals can be a problem because if you don’t have cleats for the shoes it can be hard to ride on the pedals.

Kurtis Meyer of Ohio had another idea and he created the Bike Dabs, which turn a Shimano SPD-SL clipless pedal into a flat platform pedal. Next up will be KEO, Speedplay and even Crankbrothers. These can come in handy for those times when riding the bike is necessary – such as to the store – but wearing cycling shoes isn’t a possibility.

Pivot Point

Pivot-PilotSandal maker Teva has entered the mountain bike shoe area with its new Pivot. At first glance these seem to be just another pair of casual shoes – but like many new shoes we’ve seen – there is more than meets the eye. These provide a recessed sole for cleats and the Pivot works with Shimano’s SPD as well as Crankbrothers pedal systems.

This makes the shoes ideal for commuting to work, while the Spider365 Rubber soles will grip all sorts of surfaces. The composite midsole plate makes it ideal for pedaling efficiency and walkability.

Convertible Shoe

Earlier this week we noted that Sidi has a new pair of street shoes that resemble cycling shoes, and now we’ve heard about Retrofitz, which offers a new system that can transform any street shoe into an SPD cleat-compatible shoe. The patented Retrofitz system consists of an impact modified nylon cleat plate that can attach to the soles.

The system is compatible not only with PSD, but with Crankbrothers, Time Offroad, Ritchey and Speedplay Frog cleat systems. The company can transform shoes and even offers a do-it-yourself kit.

Mallet Pedal Ready to Chop Down Hill

Downhill riding is a very different sport than cross country mountain biking, and for those who look to post serious times need a serious pedal. Fortunately Crankbrothers has a pedal that let riders chop down while descending. The Mallet DH/Race pedals were used by the pros last year and is making its way to the general market.

The pedals feature a pedal body that is extruded from machined aluminum with cast steel wings and a forged chromoly spindle. The production version’s spindle is also five millimeters longer than the original Mallet, while the inner bearing is a needle cartridge bearing and the outer bearing is a cartridge. These minor improvements should be enough to help riders get the right feel on those fast paced descents.

Pub Pedals Beat It

CrankBrothers Egg Beaters are great off-road pedals, offering a minimal base and low weight. But without cycling shoes these are a nightmare to use. Not exactly friendly for shoes without the proper cleats. But now Pub Pedals is developing cleat covers that can transform the Egg Beaters into flat pedals – ideal for commuting or just heading to the store.

Pub Pedals are looking to the public – via Indiegogo – to raise funds to bring the platforms to market. Video after the jump

Crankbrothers Crank it Up With kronolog

The old “cranks” at Crankbrothers know a thing or two about adjustable seat posts, and according to the company they have “learned that the main source of failure is an overcomplicated design.” They further noted that “Hydraulic posts are heavy and problematic, so we took a different route.”

That route has led to the kronolog, which was developed over a two-year process that included extensive design, development, prototyping, testing, redesigning and retesting. The company tells that this new post went through 10 design iterations, “and even more when you include incremental changes.” Through the process, the post was extensively tested both in the lab and on the trail. The kornolog promises to be infinitely adjustable and yet is designed to eliminate nearly all rotational-movement. Video after the jump
