Gore Bike Jacket Loses the Sleeves

In parts of the United States summer time means hot days with an unfortunate chance of rain. So what’s a cyclist to do if worried about rain but still determined to ride? A rain jacket won’t do, but a regular cycling jersey is just no fun to wear in the rain either. Gore Bike Wear has an intriguing solution, the Xenon jacket for “temperatures that don’t quite warrant a full-coverage rain shell.”

The Gore Bike Wear Xenon GT AS Jacket Short ditches the sleeves but still features the traditional waterproof GORE-TEX Active Shell fabric. It doesn’t feature a hood, so arms and head will be exposed to the elements, which in the summer heat could be refreshing. Instead it is designed to keep the core dry. U.S. Suits Up With Sunice

The Emerald Isles are known for many things, including their green beauty. This makes for scenic golf courses, but it can be a little… wet too. There is a joke that there are two kinds of weather in Ireland, which are raining and going to rain. The U.S. Solheim Cup Team will be able to beat the weather and stay warm and dry as it suits up with Sunice Outerwear for this month’s event at Killeen Castle in County Meath, Ireland.

Rosie Jones, the U.S. team captain, selected Sunice for its attention to styling and exceptional performance in a difficult wet climate and the players will wear as part of their exclusive uniform multiple Sunice garments manufactured using only Gore-Tex fabrics to ensure they are provided ultimate performance and protection from the elements.

“As we get closer to the Solheim Cup, the anticipation is mounting as we anxiously await the appearance of Team USA in their custom-designed Sunice outerwear suits,” said Mark Fletcher, President of Sunice. “The design and development process that involved our top product people working in conjunction with Rosie Jones and her assistants was a fun experience and we worked well together as a team.” Continue reading U.S. Suits Up With Sunice

GORE RideOn Cable System Goes on a Diet

W.L. Gore & Associates, the makers of GORE-TEX, have recently announced a lighter version of their RideOn cable system. With the upcoming release of the Gore RideOn Ultralight Sealed Shift Cable System, cyclists will enjoy  a 42 percent reduction in housing weight and shifting friction reduced by 20 percent. Along with the diet, the new RideOn cable system will feature 100 percent non-ferrous housing (no rusty housing); improved flexibity to aid in cable routing; full length, lubricated housing; and a new GRUB seal which is designed to be more compatible with new derailleurs.

The original RideOn Cable System was introduced back in 1993, and even though it was expensive, became a favorite for mountain bikers. I personally used RideOn cables in the mid-90’s when racing in the mud and muck of the East Coast, but to squeeze our meager racing budget, we only used it with the rear derailleur. We saved the cable and casing that was intended for the front derailleur for use later in the season with the rear derailleur. Gore stopped producing the RideOn Cable System  in 2003, but resumed after relentless requests from cyclists.

Scape Let’s You Run Without Running Into Your Eyes

Summer is just about here, and that means time to get out for a run or ride. The problem is that the sun can be very harsh, so it is advisable to cover up with sunblock. But most sun screens don’t mix well with sweat, and this can be a stinging feeling when the lotion hits the eyes.

Dr. Nic Marten devised a solution. As a lifelong enthusiast of action sports including surfing, windsurfing, snowboarding and mountain biking, he personally learned the all too hard way that sweat makes sun block run. He worked to create SCAPE Athlete Sunblock, which promises to be five times more waterproof and sweatproof than a leading sport sunblock, but more importantly provides amongst the highest levels of UVA protection.

The SCAPE Athlete Sunblock will not rub off as it features a Polyplex Polymer technology that was developed in vitro to better adhere to the skin, forming an almost Gore-Tex like barrier, yet it is breathable and keeps body temperature down. It won’t clog pores, allowing runners and other athletes to work up that good sweat. It is even loaded with vitamin E and other antioxidants to protect and nourish the skin.

It has us wanting a nice sunny day so we can sweat it up!

Old Hunters Never Die, They Just Optifade Away

After introducing its Gore Optifade Concealment Open Country pattern, which was optimized for backcountry hunters, in 2009 the company has now developed a Forest Pattern for tree stand hunters who scout out wooded environments and from elevated angles.

This is because those who hunt from heights tend to have stark contrasts, notably bright sky, dark leaves and branches, as well as being defined by the lines of trees. These lines say experts make it easier for dder and other animals to detect a hunter because of the contrasts with the sky with branches. Those the new Forest pattern doesn’t make it so easier for the prey to see the hunter in the forest from the trees. The Forest pattern is reported to have been scientifically designed for close engagement ranges of under 20 yards and for elevated angles.

Gore(Tex) in 2011

We heard that Gore-Tex will roll out a new fabric that the company says will be the most breathable waterproof material yet. The new Gore-Tex Active Shell won’t actually make it to shops until about a year from now, but it should prove to be the wait.

This new technological breakthrough in fabric shouldn’t be confused with the already on the market “Windstopper Active Shell” either. The Gore-Tex Active Shell will do much the same, but dare we say even better. According to reports it will provide a combination of lightness and breathability so it can function as a shell for cyclists and runners alike, and thus can be used in more “minimalist” garments. Additionally it will be ultra-lightweight enough that it will be good for climbers and hikers where every ounce counts. The key to getting the weight down required Gore to change the very construction, thus limiting the thickness of the layers and more importantly reducing the amount of glue used in the process.

Now the only thing to do is get through the next nine to 10 months and then try it out. We’ll keep you posted.
