Break it Down

pb&cc_protein_vectorWhile you probably wouldn’t reach for a Peanut Butter Cup after a long ride, you could grab Bonk Breaker’s new protein bar – the Peanut Butter & Chocolate Chip flavored bar. This is the latest edition to its protein bar lineup, and is consistent with the company’s philosophy of baking simple, high quality, real food ingredients into great tasting bars.

“We’ve seen huge demand for our protein bar products since introducing the first two flavors, Peanut Butter & Jelly and Almond Cherry Chunk,” said Bonk Breaker co-CEO and founder Jason Winn. “For the third addition to the high protein bar family we went for a classic favorite – Peanut Butter & Chocolate Chip – and spent a year perfecting the flavor profile and ingredients. We were committed to maintaining a clean ingredient list of real food that tastes great, which differentiates the Bonk Breaker Protein line from other protein bars on the market.”

The 62 gram bar has 13 grams of protein from brown rice protein and nuts. The bars offer a 2:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein, helping to restore depleted carbohydrate glycogen stores after exercise. Like all Bonk Breaker bars, the new flavor is gluten and dairy free.

Bonk Breaker has its followers as it is the official nutrition bar of Ironman, USA Cycling and the USA Cycling Team.

Boa Bites Into Triathlon Market

BoaBoa Technologies has helped cyclists have a snug fit with shoes that is just right. This wire-based system works in place of laces, Velcro strips or ratchet closures. Companies such as Zoots and Speicalized have expanded into the market for triathlons as well.

For 2013 Boa will sponsor nine events including the Boulder, Colorado’s Ironman 70.3 in August and the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, in October. In addition to these two Ironman events, Boa is sponsoring seven other Colorado triathlons.

At these various events, racers and competitors will have an opportunity to stop by Boa’s booth to trade their shoes for a new pair of Boa-powered footwear at pro deal prices. Used shoes will be donated to One World Running and Mountain2Mountain, two Colorado-based nonprofits.

Yurbuds Intros New Inspire Talk Earbud

Yurbuds designs headphones worthy of someone training for a marathon or triathlon. The Inspire Talk headphones are compatible with most smartphones, and have a one-button “dry-mic” sweat and water resistant microphone and control.

The new model comes in shiny black, a departure from the red models in previous Ironman Series earbud headphones from Yurbud. The one-button “dry-mic” control is sweat and water-resistant. It operates as a microphone to handle phone calls, even while on a run. With one button, runners can answer and end calls, start and stop music, adjust the music track and transmit a clear audio signal.

While the Inspire Talk is aimed at a broad number of smartphones, it has the ability to launch Apple’s Siri voice control query on the iPhone 4S.

Stroller Fit For an Ironman

Taking part in an Ironman Triathlon requires an intense level of endurance, which comes from an intense amount of training, and that means not letting something like taking the baby out for a walk get in the way. With this in mind BOB brand of strollers has rolled out its Ironman branded stroller. It reportedly offers easy handling and a smooth ride (important for the little ones who get to ride while mom or dad trains), with three-inches of travel, while a fixed front wheel remains stable on uneven terrain.

The lightweight alloy material and pneumatic tires and tubes also make for easy pushing for those doing the training, while the Low Boy Cargo Basket offers undercarriage storage so there is plenty of room for snacks and toys for those long runs. BOB even offers a double stroller as well! Continue reading Stroller Fit For an Ironman

ElliptiGo Gets You Going

Where running and cycling meet

Imagine being able to do the running and cycling parts of a triathlon at the same time? That’s sort of what the ElliptiGo can do. This outdoor elliptical bicycle essentially combines running with cycling, for what the manufacturer dubs a low-impact yet high-output cross-training form of exercise. The bike lacks any seat, but does utilize typical hand brake levers.

Developed by Bryan Plate, a former cyclist and Ironman competitor who suffered from hip and knee injuries, the ElliptiGo is a 18.1kg eight-speed trainer that is geared towards runners who want to avoid the impact of road work, but still want to remain “out of the saddle.” While the ElliptiGo is probably best for fairly flat terrain – and does require a reasonably smooth surface – the bike can reach some decent speeds, around 24 km/h, although the company maintains that strong riders/runners could reach up to 40 km/h.

The ElitptiGo retails for $2,200 and is available in blue, black and for the environmentally friendly, green.
