Olympic Technology Spotlight: Cycling Hot Pants

Hot pants – as in short shorts – are really not something that comes to mind for cycling. But the “hot pants” developed byAdidas with help from British Cycling and Loughborough University could be the next big thing for track bike racers. These track suit bottoms are actually warm up pants that can help heat up the rider’s muscles prior to competition.

The ADIPOWER are reportedly similar to the tire warmers used in Formula 1 racing, and pre-heat the muscles. These hot pants feature battery-powered heat filaments that are strategically placed on core muscle groups and maintain the temperature between warm-up and the start. The pants even feature a quick release so the garments can be stripped off at the last second – much like stripper pants in a way, but if they make the difference on the track who is going to complain. Adidas Gets Adapt and in Motion

This week Adidas unveiled its new natural running shoe collection, a first for the company, with the release of the adipure Motion for beginners to go anaturale, the adipure Gazelle for intermediate runners, and the adipure Adapt for advanced natural guns. The line of shoes is engineered to promote pure and natural movement to help runners safely and gradually improve their speed, strength and performance through minimalist running.

This is accomplished as the adipure range offers varying heel gradients to help strengthen the foot’s musculoskeletal system. The Motion, offers just an 11mm drop, which is reportedly the ideal “first step” for natural running, while the Gazelle takes it down to 7mm. Finally the Adapt, which weights just 4.5ounces, takes it to 4mm for advanced natural runners. The PMX 680 Headphones Are Good Enough for Karl Meltzer

While not exactly brand new, this week Sennheiser let it be known that ultrarunner Karl Meltzer tones up and tunes out with the Sennheiser/adidas PMX 680 Sport headphones. There are a lot of audio choices out there, but Sennheiser has a point. If Meltzer, who regularly runs 100-mile ultra-marathons, uses the headphones then they probably are something the rest of us might consider.

According to Sennheiser Meltzer runs two to three hours with music playing, and says he appreciates the support of the neckband, which also includes a reflector at the back to provide a little safety.

The PMX 680 also allows him to make volume adjustments without stopping or reaching for his audio player. He can adjust the volume from a clip on his shirt. So for those looking for a new set of headphones, think of it this way, if it works for Karl Meltzer it probably is good enough for the rest of us!
